Tanzil self-help group at Minjila in Tana River have harvested the first tomato crop from one of the farms in a community project supported by KEMFSED. Tanzil was among the groups that benefitted from the first round of KEMSED sub-project grants launched in late February this year. Farming of high-value crops complements income from fishing for coastal communities, helping to diversify economic activities.
To ensure success in the project, a technical team from the county first trained the group how to manage and account for the funds as well as on leadership. This was followed by intensive practical training on tomato farming before the team planted their first crop. After that an agricultural extension officer and other members of the county team continued to coach the group as they progressed inter new venture.
Some 87 in Tana River have received over Sh57.6 million for community projects. Over Sh800 million has been disbursed to just over 600 groups spread across Tana River, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale and Lamu counties in the first two round of KEMFSED grants. Most of these groups have started implementing their projects, which include farming, deep-sea fishing and mariculture.
Please join us in saying Hongera Tonsil as we look forward to sharing more stories of groups that are using their KEMFSED grants to transform lives!
